Geography
Geography teaches us about our planet and the world we live in.
In Geography, our vision is for all children to develop a natural curiosity and fascination about the natural and human world around them. We endeavour to broaden children’s real-life experiences, providing a comprehensive curriculum for all our learners.
Developing a global understanding, students will pose questions and seek answers as they explore their immediate locality, before journeying into the wider world beyond. Pupils will immerse themselves in a variety of diverse countries and cultures, gathering self-awareness which will empower them to become respectful and responsible citizens, able to navigate a complex and ever-changing world.
Teaching a varied and well-planned geography curriculum, we aim to take our children on a journey around the world, visiting places of interest, significance and relevance so that their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments whilst developing skills fieldwork skills.
INTENT - Why do we teach this? Why do we teach it in the way we do?
At Hill Top CE Primary School our geography teaching aims to:
- Equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments.
- Build children’s knowledge of the world and deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.
- Allow children to become competent in geographical fieldwork skills and interpret and use a range of geographical sources to communicate information in a variety of ways.
IMPLEMENTATION - What do we teach? What does this look like?
At Hill Top the geography curriculum is delivered through the teaching of specific topics appropriate to the age group being taught and link to other areas of the curriculum. Each topic is designed to meet a number of specific learning goals and skills, as outlined in the national curriculum. These serve to drive the topic’s planning, teaching and learning. Due to the structure of these topics, the progression of geographical skills can be evidenced, assessed and evaluated consistently.
Each year group studies the following topics:
Throughout geography lessons children are encouraged to make links between their own environment and where they live and compare this to other parts of the world. Regular trips, visits and opportunities for fieldwork are built into the topics to enrich the children’s learning and offer them different experiences.
Children are also encouraged to link and connect their geography learning across other subjects and are encouraged to write and demonstrate their knowledge of this subject in a variety of ways. Writing opportunities are demonstrated in the table below.
IMPACT - What do we want to happen?
At Hill Top we believe that a high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. In a world that is rapidly changing and adapting to technology, geography and knowledge of the environment is an important skill that will inform and impact upon future generations.
